Don't be afraid to ask for help. Many people feel embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help with their depression but this is unnecessary as it's a common and treatable problem that you don't have to deal with alone. Tap into campus resources to find help or tell a friend how you're feeling.
Keep in touch with family and friends. You can help beat homesickness and loneliness by keeping in touch with friends and family members.
Build new friendships. A big part of the college experience is meeting new people and forming new friendships so get out there and meet new people whenever possible.
Expect things to change. Things will change both at home and in your school life, so expect things to change over time. You will grow and so will the people around you.
Understand that it may take time to fit in. Most people don't make best friends on the first day of college. It takes time to build friendships, so don't get discouraged if you don't fit in right away.

Here are a few other tips to keep you a healthy and active college student.

Avoid walking to class in flip flops. While they may keep your feet cool and look good with your summer wardrobe, few flip flops provide the support needed for your feet. You’re going to have to start somewhere, right? Regardless of how you’re spending your Halloween, make sure you eat a nutritious and seasonal dinner! We recommend Stuffed Jack-o-Lantern Peppers, Pumpkin soup, Frankenstein Cucumber Sandwiches, or these low-fat cheese and veggie Vampire Pizzas! Make sure to jam pack your supper with tons of seasonal veggies to fuel up for the fun Halloween festivities!

Candy

We love the sweet stuff just as much as the next guy, but when it comes to getting fit in the fall, we have to set up some guidelines. When it comes to Halloween, it is all too easy to go bonkers and eat all the candy before the cute little trick-or-treaters even get to the front door. (Poor little things never really had a shot). So while you’re waiting to see the parade of pirates and Dora the Explorers at your door, PUT THE CANDY AWAY. *Gasp!* that’s right! Out of sight, out of mind. Do something else until night falls and when the first group shows up at your door, pillow case in hand, THEN get the candy out of the other room and hand out accordingly. *We recommend Paydays, Dark Chocolate, and 3 Musketeers as low-calorie/high protein alternatives.
Trick-or-treating

If you have little tots of your own and you’ll be participating in the candy parade, put on your walking shoes! Don’t let your kids go with someone else! Use this time not only to bond with your little angry bird and Princess Sofia, but get some exercise in, too! Some have estimated that the average parent/kid duo walk 5 miles begging for candy! So burn some calories and take the tykes out on Halloween… and don’t ruin it by eating their candy! Show some restraint, man!

Okay, so maybe you’re skipping the whole trick-or-treating thing altogether and hitting up a Halloween party or two. You can still keep your “fit for fall mentality” throughout the night. Watch out for those ghoulish finger foods! Making healthy choices will keep you in the clear of extra calories that will haunt you for days to come. Look for fruits and veggies on the appetizer table, and avoid greasy or cheesy bites! Many finger foods are more like tricks than treats! So choose wisely. It’s always a good idea to bring your own appetizer to the party, so you know you have something to nibble on throughout the night. Alcohol: we know everyone will be drinking that “witch’s brew” and lord knows how much sugar is in that thing, bring your own! If you don’t opt for your own brew at the party, then just take a small cup and cut it down with some water. Alcohol is very sugary, so even if you’re avoiding the candy, you could still be burying yourself alive with sugar, like a soon-to-be zombie.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, or amputation, and it affects almost 26 million Americans. Another 79 million are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adults. Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents, although still rare, is being diagnosed more frequently. It usually begins as insulin resistance, a condition in which cells do not use insulin properly. As the need for insulin rises, the pancreas gradually loses its ability to produce it. Type 2 diabetes is associated with:

family history of diabetes
history of gestational diabetes
impaired glucose metabolism
physical inactivity
race/ethnicity (African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, some Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes and its complications)
Type 2 Diabetes Prevention
The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) says making small changes, like becoming more active and losing a small amount of weight if you’re overweight, can go a long way toward helping prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Losing even 10 to 15 pounds – if you weigh 200 pounds – can make a big difference.

If you have diabetes, you can help prevent complications by making changes to reach your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol goals. The NDEP offers a “Make A Plan” tool to help identify, organize, and meet your goals, plus information on how to stop smoking and cope with stress.

During American Diabetes Month, the American Diabetes Association is calling for individuals to take a stand and support the move to Stop Diabetes® by participating in online information sharing and support.

Physicians from National University of Health Sciences offer some natural tips that may help reduce your risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and may be helpful if you already have it.

“Making a few relatively simple dietary and lifestyle changes, and adding additional screening to your annual physical, can go a long way in diabetes prevention,” says Dr. Brian Anderson, chiropractic physician at National’s on-campus integrative medical center. “Prevention steps are especially important if you have a family history of diabetes.”

5 Natural Health Tips for Type 2 Diabetes Prevention

1. Breakfast protein. Consume adequate protein for breakfast to help stabilize your blood sugar for the rest of the day. Dr. Anderson often recommends a meal replacement shake for breakfast with the following recipe: 2 scoops of your favorite protein powder, 6 – 8 ounces of yogurt or Kefir, 4 ounces of water, 1/2 cup of frozen berries.

2. Water. Start replacing sodas, commercial sports drinks, and other sugary drinks with water. “This is one of the biggest diabetes prevention tips for children and young people,” says Anderson. “Diabetes is striking increasingly younger age groups, and parents would do well to make water the first option when their kids are thirsty.”

3. Glycemic index. Educate yourself about the glycemic index and glycemic load and change dietary habits to choose foods lower on the glycemic index. Anderson explains that different foods can have a different impact on blood sugar elevation. Choosing foods that are lower on the glycemic index — for example, choosing whole grains over processed white flour products — can help stabilize your blood sugar levels.

4. Walk. Start using a pedometer and work your way up to 10,000 steps per day. Physical activity maintains insulin sensitivity. Even if you’re not up to a major workout, most people can walk more than they do.

5. Bio-impedance test. Have a bio-impedance test to give you your baseline body composition. A bio-impedance test can be performed by chiropractic physicians and will give you the most accurate measure of your body composition. A major risk factor in type 2 diabetes is obesity, so lowering body fat and gaining lean muscle mass is recommended.

As he has for the last seven years, Tony Robinson, 47, heads straight from work on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons to a nearby hemodialysis center in Orlando, Fla.

A nurse gives him a checkup, then Robinson settles into one of the recliners circling the room. Propping his left arm up, he allows a technician to slip two needles into blood vessels near his wrist. The needles -- one to capture the blood and the other to return it -- are attached to plastic tubes leading to a dialysis machine beside the chair.

For the next three hours, this device, which looks like a tall, narrow, automated teller machine, removes wastes and extra fluid from Robinson's blood. He passes the hours by reading, watching the evening news, and sometimes dozing.

Robinson was born with only one kidney. It failed when he was in his 30s, as did a kidney transplant. For now, dialysis keeps him alive.

Except for the initial needle stick, the procedure doesn't hurt. "You never get used to the needles, you just learn to handle them," he says with a laugh. "Sometimes I feel sick on my stomach if my blood pressure drops, but other than that, it's not bad."


Robinson is one of approximately 217,000 Americans who receive ongoing dialysis, at an annual cost of $11.1 billion nationwide. Since the late 1960s, the procedure has been used in place of kidneys lost to disease, birth defects, or injury. It can be used temporarily until the kidneys resume function or the patient receives a transplant, or for years if those options are not available.

With dialysis, Robinson and many others like him can live full and active lives. In fact, Robinson works full-time as an investigator with the Food and Drug Administration's Orlando office. His job requires him to walk distances through production plants, climb ladders, and lift boxes to inspect products. He travels to cities all over Florida to conduct inspections. The overnight trips are not a problem as long as he schedules dialysis ahead of time in the cities he visits.

"If a dialysis patient is otherwise healthy, they should be afforded the opportunity to work," says Robinson. "No one should say you're disabled or restricted to certain areas. I travel, go to training, do inspections -- and I have since 1990. I've gotten adjusted to arranging things around the treatments."

Dialysis Under Scrutiny
Since the 1960s, surveillance studies have consistently shown that American dialysis patients do not live as long as those in other countries -- the U.S. mortality rate for dialysis patients is about 23 percent, twice the rate of patients in Western Europe or Japan.

A number of factors seem to be the cause. As a whole, American clinics perform hemodialysis treatments for a shorter length of time than in other countries, both because reimbursement doesn't increase for lengthier treatments and patients don't want to sit for five or six hours, according to Dr. Garabed Eknoyan, president of the National Kidney Foundation and professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. "If you talk to any of the patients, you'll find it's hard to convince them to stay five hours. They come in late and want to leave early."
